A bit of a fun post today on a new term used in 3GPP: In the past I always had to smile about work items referred to as enhanced something (eXXX), further enhanced something (feXXX) and even further enhanced something (efeXXX). Its getting a bit difficult after that one… Or LTE (Long Term Evolution) which isn’t that long term anyway with 5G New Radio (NR) now sidelining LTE, which itself won’t be so new anymore in 10 years down the road. But now 3GPP has come up with a term to describe the flexibility built into the 5G New Radio air interface that makes me smile and rub my eyes even more: ‘numerology’
If you are not an English native speaker there’s a good chance the word will not mean much to you. So let me quote Wikipedia on numerology:
“Numerology is any belief in the divine, mystical relationship between a number and one or more coinciding events. It is also the study of the numerical value of the letters in words, names and ideas. It is often associated with the paranormal, alongside astrology and similar divinatory arts.“
Wow I’m speechless! I really wonder who coined the term in 3GPP and if that person was aware of the primary meaning of the word? If you know please leave a comment with some details.
Somebody must have seen the irony as well and was quick to add a note on the use of the term in 3GPP in the same Wikipedia article in the “other uses of the term” section. Kudos to Gunnar H. for making me aware of this!
