4G/5G Dynamic Spectrum Sharing – Technical Details

Back in November 2019 I had a post on how to get to nationwide 5G coverage. One of the options to do that is Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS), a method to run LTE and 5G NR in the same channel. For a general introduction, see my post from back then. In the meantime a number of interesting resources have been published that give quite a lot of background information on the technology that I thought I should link from here.

For those who like video tutorials, Rhode & Schwarz has made a number videos that demonstrate how DSS works on the air interface (and how it can be simulated with their devices). The latest one is a 30 minute overall introduction. In addition, there are three earlier videos, around 10 to 15 minutes on different aspects:

And on the whitepaper side, MediaTek has published a document that explains the technology for those with background knowledge on the LTE and NR air interface.

Overall, a cool way to get 5G everywhere and a potential technology for a smooth transition of spectrum from LTE to NR and a bit further out to a 5G core network with 5G-only access.
