Ubuntu’s built-in screenshot utility has come a long way and is quite good in the meantime. Unfortunately, there are two features that are missing: I can’t blur parts of the screenshot during the process and I can’t mark a certain part of the image or put an arrow onto the image to draw attention. Sure, I could do it later with another program, but that’s just overhead that keeps me from doing it. Thus, I’ve been using Flameshot for many years. When I moved over to Ubuntu 26.04, however, it looked like it wouldn’t work anymore. Wayland, you know… But that’s not true and there is even a way to make it work without modifying configuration files!
So here’s how to get Flameshot working with Ubuntu 26.04 and Wayland:
- Install it via the standard apt repository (sudo apt install flameshot). No snap or flatpak version need.
- Next, search for ‘Flameshot’ in the GUI launcher and then pin it to the launcher dock on the left side.
- Then, start it from there, so the little Flameshot icon appears in the status bar at the top right.
- Important: Don’t try to do a screenshot with it yet. First, go to the icon at the status bar, click on it and select the ‘Configuration’ menu entry to open a dialog box.
- And only now, take screenshot with Flameshot. The first time this is done, the Gnome desktop opens a dialog box that asks whether to allow Flameshot to take screenshots.
- Allow it once and you are done, Flameshot is working again in Wayland!
