When it comes to input devices, I do have my preferences. For many years, I’ve been using Logitech M650 mice for many reasons, the main one being is that they have silent keys. The main drawback of them, however: The buttons wear out over time. Very irritating. My fix so far: Buy a new mouse. But these mice are expensive, so I was wondering if one could perhaps exchange the switches used below the mouse buttons. And indeed, this is possible and it costs almost nothing!
The M650 and their larger ‘L’ variants are easy to disassemble, the casing opens after removing two screws and the board is in your hands after removing 4 more. Someone described the process on iFixIt here and the switches I found that looked like they could fit were ‘RUNJRX 6 x 6 x 7,3 mm‘ silent switches. The numbers are the dimensions in millimeter. So I bought some of those for a few cents a piece and tried them out. Replacing them is straight forward, de-soldering 2 pins of the old switch, removing the switch, putting the switch in and soldering the two pins to the board again is all it takes. 5 minutes of work and two of my failed M650 mice are working like new again!
